I'm a recently-retired third-generation Navy officer who rarely went to sea; I now work as a liaison and information broker for a complex Navy Info Tech program (if I told you the name I'd be universally reviled). I am much happier doing things, preferably with other people, than talking about abstract ideas, and while I enjoy listening to most kinds of music and watching movies/performances, I can't stand commercial spectator sports. But I could sit for hours listening to any kind of craftsman, from woodcarver to auto mechanic, talk about his work, and would probably have some knowledge of the craft myself to contribute or to ask intelligent questions. I haven't owned a TV for nearly seven years now -- and don't feel I've missed much!
I love making folk music, body art (paint / masks / glued-on jewelry), ballroom / jitterbug / contra dance patterns, good food and interesting messes with all kinds of people. I have a definite tropism towards all kinds of critters, which are also attracted to me; I rode horses (English) for years, and if there's a dog or cat in the room it's probably sitting on my feet. I'm a longtime historical reenactor (including medieval cookery, costuming/weaving, dance, and history of gardening); I am an avid gardener and also raise about 15 colors of Fancy English Show Mice.
In September 2003 I split up with my SO of 13 years, and now live happily on my own in Lanham MD with the mice and a half-Abby cat in a house he and I had bought from a NASA engineer -- the workmanship of whose additions explains a lot about the Challenger and Columbia. I have an eclectic crowded mostly-shade garden on this 2/3 acre plot, though I carefully reserve the sunny spots for the reblooming irises and historic roses that are my especial delight. I try to have something sweet-scented blooming from February to frost. I am very proud of having been for years the sole female straight member of the DC Gay Men's Garden Club.
